Veterans Affairs considers dumping Minneapolis veterans in Hastings against their will



The home has enough single rooms for 50 people. But for the past year, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs has ceased accepting new admissions, limiting the home to 80 percent capacity.

Veterans weren’t sure why. Then rumors began to travel, as nurses and staff received word that Veterans Affairs had plans to relocate everyone to the more institutionalized, isolated, and crowded veterans home in Hastings.

“We heard what they were planning on doing, not just from here, but from Hastings as well. We’ve got friends and staff members that are willing to leak this information,” says resident Randall Hixson, a Vietnam-era Army veteran. “People like us. I don’t know why.”
