The worst government is often the most moral. One composed of cynics is often very tolerant and humane. But when fanatics are on top there is no limit to oppression. — Mencken
This story from Keith Olbermann’s daily Podcast “Resist!” presented by GQ raised a question in my mind that I’m going to struggle with. Is my country, Lincoln’s Last Best Hope that a Democratic Republic can actually work, doomed to a widening, downward gyre of failure, prejudice and oppression because WE ARE TOO DAMNED STUPID TO SURVIVE? It’s particularly apropos because the Republican House has just pulled the SCREWOBAMACARE HEALTHCARE ACT from a vote today with a possible vote tomorrow because it’s such a soup sandwich that can’t do what Trump wants, Ryan Wants, McConnell wants, and what the voters want.
Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard. -Mencken
Olbermann is beginning to come to the opinion that Trump is now running a regime that has paralells to Saddam Hussein or Erdogan. He reminds us of the Iraqi belief that Hussein had a magic stone either on a cord around his neck or implanted in his body that made it impossible to kill him, or if he was killed, unbelievable horror and chaos would ensue. He points out the absurdity of Erdogan being “toppled” by a coup that just happened to not shoot down his plane even though they knew it was his plane and were there, next to him. Neither Olbermann nor I are big on “false flags” but come on, Ceren, you can do better than that in channeling Suleiman the Magnificent.
Next, , he tells a story about a woman discovered by Jenna Johnson for WAPO the other night at Trump’s Rally in Nashville,Tennessee. The woman, a 52 year old retired first grade teacher tells her story that her son lost his job but had his insurance premium drop by about 87% — she describes this as a miracle by God. By God, she says, brought to her son by the Tax Credits…the Trump Tax Credits that are really the Ryan Tax Credits that really don’t exist yet. Her son doesn’t owe anything to Trump for this, but to Obamacare. So now why we have a better understanding, as sort of collateral coverage, of the answer to “Is our Children Learning and Why Not?”
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, White House will be adorned by a downright moron. -Mencken
Dear God…no wonder the country is screwed and so many of our schools are producing illiterate, ignorant and dangerous types. We have had delusional people filling students’ heads with fantasies of magic stones, magic Arks and magic thinking. If this woman knew anything about government, she’d understand that Congress, not Trump by fiat — establishes ‘Tax Credits’ and if she understood math, she’d understand that the “tax credit” in the Trump plan would do her unemployed son no good.
Now Olbermann isn’t completely convinced, and neither am I. He does still think that Trump is there for complicated reasons but that his success in getting elected — selling a product, sales and marketing — highlights the fact that he and his team are all idiots, or crazy. Or stoned. “They act like they’re stoned.” he says.
Remember Lindsay Graham saying last year when he endorsed Ted Cruz, “I’m on the Ted Train!” Asked why, he responded, “He’s not crazy.” That’s open for discussion. However, this one indicates to me that, well, crazy, delusional or stoned, the Trump junta has a hell of a lot of fellow travelers.
In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for; as for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican. – Mencken
