Remembering USS Liberty at Mournful Gathering

Remembering USS Liberty at Mournful Gathering

The lightly armed American spy ship was strafed, napalmed and torpedoed by Israeli air and naval forces for more than an hour in broad daylight during the Six-Day War. But for a crewman gerry-rigging a radio to get a message out to the fleet, many Liberty survivors believe they would have been sunk with all hands.

Remembering the USS LIBERTY

It is with profound sadness that we remember the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty, which took place 44 years ago today. We grieve for the families who lost their sons, brothers, husbands, and fathers, and the crew members who lost their shipmates. We grieve for a crew that was abandoned by its Commander in Chief in the midst of a ruthless attack, and by its government afterward.

On June 8, 1967, during the Six-Day War between Israel and the Arab States, Israeli fighter planes and torpedo boats attacked the U.S. Navy intelligence ship Liberty for 90 minutes in international waters, following several hours of low-level reconnaissance flights by Israeli aircraft.

The USS Liberty incident was an attack on a United States Navy technical research ship, USS Liberty, by Israeli Air Force jet fighter aircraft and Israeli Navy torpedo boats, on June 8, 1967, during the Six-Day War. The combined air and sea attack killed 34 crew members (naval officers, seamen, two Marines, and one civilian), wounded 170 crew members, and severely damaged the ship. At the time, the ship was in international waters north of the Sinai Peninsula, about 25.5 nmi (29.3 mi; 47.2 km) northwest from the Egyptian city of Arish.

Those wanting to know why their world is going down in flames these days viz-a-viz the interminable, bankrupting wars in the Middle East need to know history before they can understand the present, and the first lesson that needs explaining in this regard is Israel’s deliberate 2 hour attack upon the American-flag ship USS LIBERTY in June of 1967.

Why Really The USS Liberty Was Attacked by Israel?

By Alan Hart I want to begin by saying that though I covered wars wherever they were taking place on Planet Earth in my television reporting days – it was in Vietnam as a very young correspondent that I first started to ask myself questions about why things are as they are in the world – […]

From Central Florida Veterans For Peace: Would the US allow its citizens to be attacked and killed by a foreign power and then cover up the facts? It would – and it has.
