Vietnam veterans honored in ‘welcome home’ event

The band played and the crowd cheered Friday evening as nearly 100 Vietnam veterans got off the bus at the Box Elder County Courthouse and were welcomed home from war, more than 40 years after it ended.

As young men, they either came home to protest or they returned home in plain clothes, sometimes in the dark of night — but they got off the bus on Friday with heads held high.

“To ride the bus down and have people cheer and salute you, you can’t help but get a little tear in your eye,” said Kelly Cronquist of Hyrum. Cronquist, an active member of the South Cache American Legion, is a Vietnam veteran who served in the United States Army.
